Responding to Bishop Robert N. Lynch’s call for a deeper
appreciation of the Eucharist and its role in the Catholic
faith, the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle will present a
parish mission January 20 through January 24, dedicated to
the Eucharist.
The five-day event will begin a three-year period of intense
reflection on the Mass.
The first year will focus on the Liturgy of the Word; the second year will
highlight the Liturgy of the Eucharist; and the final year will consider
what it means to carry the Christ we receive in Communion out into the
world. At the end of the third
year, a special diocesan celebration of the Eucharist will give thanks for
the new and deeper understanding of what it means to be a Eucharistic
people.
Last November, Bishop Lynch delivered his first pastoral letter
entitled Living Eucharist: Gathered,
Nourished and Sent. In the
letter, he told the members of the Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg that
he hoped they would make a commitment to pray and study during the next
three years in order to achieve three things: a better understanding of the
Eucharist as a gift; a desire to participate more fully and regularly in the
liturgy; and the encouragement to evangelize.
The Cathedral is inviting everyone in the diocese to attend.
The mission will open Saturday and Sunday during the regularly
scheduled Masses January 19th and 20th.
On Sunday Evening, January 20th, there will be a Youth
Night at
7:00 p.m., which is open to youth high school age through young
adult. The focus of the evening
will be Youth-Future of the Church.
The mission will continue at 7:00 p.m. January 21 with
The Road to
Emmaus; Henri J.M. Nouwen’s
Spiritual Meditation on the Eucharistic Life. January 22, at 7:00 p.m. this program will explore Maintenance
to Mission.
This is an opportunity to understand the Church since the Second
Vatican Council, as well as a look at our future.
On January 23, the Journey of Faith
will include an 8:15 a.m. student
Mass and a program open to all. At 7:00 p.m. The focus will be the beginning
of the Pastoral Plan for the Cathedral.
January 24, is the Solemn Closing Mass, with an introduction to
Bishop’s Lynch’s First Pillar for this year on the Liturgy of the Word. All
four evenings will include Eucharistic exposition and benediction.
Timothy R. Smith of Oregon Catholic Press will conduct the mission.
Smith is known for his creative and versatile musical styles, incorporating
our common journey of commitment to God: from fear to faith, from doubt to
trust, and from pride to surrender.
