Discipline policy in a Catholic school is designed to
promote charity and respect amongst all members of the
school community and also proper treatment of school and
personal property.
While this handbook cannot possibly cover every
discipline scenario, the school’s administration, with the
final approval of the Pastor, reserves the right to
administer any appropriate corrective measure including
suspension or expulsion for any behavior deemed not to be in
accord with Catholic moral teaching or the precepts
contained in this handbook.
With
regards to electronic devices, we are trying to implement a
policy that teaches responsibility of use.
Unless permission is specifically given to the
contrary for educational purposes, students may not possess
ipods, mp3 players, beepers, cell phones or other electronic
devices during school hours.
These items should be turned off and stored in the
student locker during the school day.
Such items, if not stored properly from arrival on
campus until the dismissal bell, will be confiscated and
turned in to an administrator.
All confiscated items must be picked up by the
student’s parent/guardian from an administrator at the end
of the school day.
A second violation will result in the student losing
the privilege to bring any electronic item on the school
campus.
The
following infractions are considered Serious Disruptions of
the Catholic environment of our school:
·
Disrespect and disruptions in
dealing with teachers and other students
·
Verbal or physical harassment
of other students and/or teachers
·
Vulgar language, gestures, or
signs
·
Property damage or vandalism
of school property or student possessions
·
Fighting and/or physical
violence
·
Stealing
·
Cheating, copying,
plagiarism, forgery
·
Possession and/or use of
cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, weapons (real or facsimile)
·
Public display of affection
·
Use of electronic devices
from 7:00 am until
3:30 pm
on the school campus
·
Possession or chewing of gum
or candy
·
Bringing magnets into any
classroom or office
Any of
the above infractions will be reported to the
administration. One of the following actions may be taken:
detention, suspension, probation, or expulsion.
Parental
notification of infractions will occur via phone call,
RenWeb/email, or a note home.
Parents/guardians are expected to help reinforce the
policies of the school at home.
DETENTION
Detention notification will be sent as a behavior notice from RenWeb.
The
elementary grade’s detention days vary, but middle school’s
detentions will be served on a set day determined at the
beginning of the school year.
Students should
assume the responsibility of telling their parent/guardian
about the detention.
Failure to serve a detention will result in
additional detention time.
SUSPENSION
A
suspension is the temporary removal of a student from the
regular school program for a specified period of time. A
student may receive either an in-school suspension, which is
served on school grounds or an out-of-school suspension,
which restricts the student from school grounds and is
served at the home of the student.
The
student is prohibited from taking part in any school
activity and/or function. The student will not be able to
return to school until at least one or both
parents/guardians, the student, and the administration have
met to discuss the situation and take means to avoid similar
situations in the future.
PROBATION
Probation is a signed contract by a student, their
parents/guardians, and the administration. This contract
states the reason for the student being placed on probation.
All involved parties must agree to the terms stated in the
contract.
EXPULSION
Expulsion is the removal of a student from the school
program and will become a part of the student’s permanent
record.
In
addition to a severe disruption, as listed previously, any
of the following infractions may merit expulsion:
·
Use and/or possession of
narcotics, drugs, or other controlled substances
·
Continual disrespect or
threat (implied or otherwise) toward faculty,
administration, or students
·
Damaging school property
·
Use and/or possession of
alcohol or a weapon (real and/or a facsimile)
·
Sexual, physical or
psychological harassment
·
Physical violence or the
threat thereof
·
Improper use of an electronic
device, for example cheating, unauthorized photography, or
sending/receiving text messages
Expulsion would normally come after a period of probation
during which time the student and parents/guardians would be
aware of the consequences of subsequent violations. However,
there may be situations which demand immediate removal of a
student from the school. If the serious nature of the
problem warrants, expulsion may be the first punishment
invoked against a student. The student and his/her
parents/guardians have the right to call and discuss the
situation with the Pastor and request conciliation between
the parties.
Students
are bound by school policies and regulations whenever they
are on the school grounds or during off campus, school
sponsored activities.
